Journal Two. From Coach Daniel Arndt

Hello my name is Daniel Arndt also known as Coach.  I a forty-three years old and

married to the same amazing woman for the last 24 years.  I am the proud father of

three sons two are half way through their second year of college and the youngest is a

junior at Marion Harding high school.  I have Coached football for the last 20 years

and am currently on the Varsity staff at Marion Harding as a defensive line coach

Co-defensive coordinator, and special teams coordinator.

After twenty-six years of being out of school I finally realized that  my true calling

and passion in life was to become a teacher,  so here I am forty-three years old and I

Can finally say I want to become a teacher when I grow up.  My family and peers are

all amazing supporters of this mission and I have zero doubts with their support I will

achieve this mission and be in a class room sharing knowledge with our future leaders

In no time.

As I am reading The House On Mango Street I am really starting to see what so

many can relate with, and that is pride, love, and shame.  In my opinion Esperanza

is a child who has been raised to this point to value family and to appreciate the things

that she has in her life.  However as she becomes older or more mature she starts to

realize that from a financial and materialistic standpoint life was not as good as her

family  has made it out to be, and others outside of her family have reaffirmed her new

found thoughts.

I feel this is important because so many others have been in her situation including

myself.  For years you are going through life thinking everything is great.   You have

parents that dedicate time to you and your siblings, family and togetherness is

everything.  Then you realize wow people really have this and that, or I don’t have

to share a bathtub or toilet with the guy down the hall, or maybe that boy has his very

own bicycle why cant I.

There becomes a point everybody goes through this and they start to

question who they are and who they want to become, and she is at the beginning of that

road.  She is thankful for what she has and blessed to have parents that love and value

there children, but she wants more out of life she demands more out of herself and

life period.

  1. Thanks so much for getting us rolling Coach and nice blogging here. Good to hear more about your family and career goals, and your take on Esperanza. You point out how we are all a mix of culture and expectations, combined with the vision and goals we set and pursue despite it all.

Now the other students can start joining in and I know some people are having trouble with the invites, and uploading photos, but we will get there. Nice work!

  3. Thank you for asking Liz. There are so many rewards in Coaching, the excitement of a Friday night, the constant chess match with you opponents, the preparation and strategy that goes into a game plan.
However, for me, it's the kids. There is nothing more rewarding than working with a young person and seeing the pure joy and excitement on their faces when they accomplish a task. Plus the relationships you develop with the kids and their families. It is an extension of your family and a relationship that lasts forever.

I could go on forever but I don't want to bore you to much.

  5. Hey Daniel, did you graduate High School from Marion Harding? The reason I ask is that we would've been in High School at the same time, though I graduated from River Valley.

I'm glad you wrote about your reason why you're attending OSU. I can somewhat relate to what you said about finally feeling like you found your true calling. While I haven't found my true calling, I feel like I'm on the right path to finding it.

As far as The House on Mango Street, I agree with your insight on the theme of love and shame, but I don't see pride; instead, I see bitterness in some of the characters' responses and attitudes.

Glad to have you in the class!

  6. It is really inspiring that you decided to go back to school to be able to teach others. It is good to see somebody following their dreams.

  7. Hi! I love that you didn’t let your age stop you from following your passion! That is very inspiring to me and really teaches that age is really nothing but a number! You can really do anything as long as you put forth the effort. Good job!

  8. Great to meet you coach. I always enjoy hearing your knowledge and intellect on the sport of football and reading the book One and Done has given you a platform to share your passion openly. I agree with the value of family life, I didn't recognize that theme on my own but yes it is one of the most important in my own life as well.
