something that stood out to me was that Maurice has the mind set that a coach pulling him off the field to give others a chance was the coach spiting him for switching from a sport he was good at to basketball. he saw that there were varsity that he was better than. And he figured that being use to set a example was a good reason to not just leave the team but the school as well. This struck me because almost never can you start a sport and skip straight to varsity.

Journal 3 Noah Henault
In my reading I noticed a lot of strengths and weaknesses but if I had to point figures. a weakness of one and done is not so much of a weakness as it is a pet peeve, the whole first chapter is a introduction but the book already has a intro. and that can be good but it draws me more away from the meaning of the book towards just how he got where he is and then it comes back to hi story and I have no other gripes. a pro of one and done is its depth of his up bringing. meaning you can se what he was talking about in his intro when he says that he was not raised in the best place. Now when it comes to house on mango street the only weakness I see is just that with the length of the stories I feel that they jump a bit oddly but I can defend that by saying that the author does a good job of connecting dots

Noah,
ReplyDeleteIt also struck me to see how fast he was able to jump from just starting the sport to getting into varsity. It kind of shows how he was such an amazing player when it is put in to that perspective. It was natural talent. I disagree when you say that the first chapter is an introduction after the book already had an introduction. I can see where you get the idea from, but I think that it is all necessary. The books introduction and prologue briefly talk about the main part of the story. The first chapter is just starting from the very beginning to get you an idea of what his life was like growing up. The first couple of chapters are to give you a background of his life while was younger and going through grade school in Youngstown, Ohio. It is relevant in my opinion because it is building up his story. I believe that as we keep reading, his childhood and the first couple of chapters will make more sense.
Good work!

Noah,
ReplyDeleteThe coach situation with the high school varsity team is a problem no matter what school you go to I feel. We had close to the same problem at my high school. There is always those 3 or 4 kids the coach prefers over everyone else. I feel this is only a concentrated topic in basketball though because there is only 5 starting position compared to football(~25) or baseball(~10). I would love to know what you think.
