Journal 3 by Fatimata Cisse

  • I think the book “ the house on mango street” is good about subtly addressing differences in a way kids understand. The book has very clear imagery. You as the reader can picture almost every scene and character.  It’s a book that I believe many people can pull things from, things that they can relate to. The only thing I could see being a weakness of the book is the writing . . I would say the book is geared certain towards kids of younger age.
  • The book “ one and done” I would say is geared to an older audience in comparison to the book “the house on mango street”. The book doesn’t seem to also be very good about imagery. The reader can clearly picture every word of the book. The book does seem to be written like a diary or biography. If I were to pick out a weakness of the book, I would say some of the choice of some wording, which isn’t geared towards everyone.
  • As I get further into the book “ one and done” I can’t help but think about how Maurice’s grandmother helped bond the family together and avoid trouble.  It wasn’t until his grandmother passed that things started to become rocky. In the book, Maurice states that he never really knew his father much. His mother was at work, and he was left to be at his grandmother where it seems he enjoyed himself. It states in the book “ she would Drop us off at grandmas very morning and pick us up in the evening. I couldn’t wait to get dropped off there because that’s where all the fun was”. I think that there was a change of character in him after he no longer went to his grandmothers house, and seen his family. He even stated that he really wasn’t doing too much or seeing any hustling going on  because he was at his grandmothers house.

  1. Fatimata,

I agree with your opinion on Clarrett's grandmother. It was as if being at his grandmothers was a shield to the bad things that actually happened in his neighborhood. He would be distracted by his other family members spending time with them and playing football. Her house was the safe environment. I believe that people experience this in their own lives as well. We have our safe place and then once we step out of it and encounter something that we have not seen before, good or bad, we are influenced. I enjoyed reading your journal three.
