Journal Two from Elizabeth

Me at my uncles wedding one of the few occasions I will dress up for

Hi my name is Elizabeth Horton and I like to go by Liz. I’m a freshman this year and am the first in my family to attend a true university. I was the student who could study five minutes before my honors classes and pass with high A’s in highschool so coming into college I got a rude awakening realizing I would actually need to study. I enjoy riding quads, dirt bikes and horses. I also love sports and I work on a farm. My fun fact is I have six tattoos, each one represents something family related because they’re a big part of my life.
In the novel The House on Mango Street the main theme I believe is not everything Is the way it seems. I think this is important because when Esperanza’s parents tell her they’re moving into a real house she didn’t expect the brick house with windows so small they look like they’re holding their breathe. She expected the house Papa talked about and the house Mama spoke about in the stories shed tell them. I have experienced this theme in a backwards way i believe its still relevant. My parents got me a brand new car when i graduated, and when they told me they were giving me a car i expected i would get my dads old work truck. So getting a different car than i expected shows not everything is what it seems to be. My favorite part of the passage where i highlighted was when she spoke about her great grandmother being as wild as a horse. This is my favorite because i can relate to her, i also don’t want to be married and have kids working a nine to five job living in the typical blue collar house. I want to teach English and then in the evenings and weekends be a tattoo artist and piercer. I also want a strange shaped and small home so no one has a house that looks like mine. She doesn’t want to fit in and neither do i.

  1. Hi Liz, I too found high school easy, and could pass my classes with barely studying. As for college, I found that that would not work for me as well. I liked the passage about the grandmother.

  2. Liz, speaking as the old guy of the class I have mad respect for you due to the fact of realizing college was different than high school. That is extremely hard to do and adapt to the change, most are unable to do so. I think it is awesome you want to become a teacher. Teaching is the most rewarding thing one can do, it is something that lasts forever and never breaks or we're down.

I love your explanation of the book up to this point and I liked how you showed a relationship between the writing and you're own personal experience. That to me put it into perspective. Hope you have an amazing semester and college experience, as I tell my football players stay humor and make good decisions and life will treat you well.

  3. I too can relate with not being prepared for all the studying required for college , high school felt more like a breeze. College is definitely more challenging and time consuming.

  4. Hi! You and I had the same rude awakening unfortunately. I’m a huge procrastinator so studying doesn’t come easy. It’s cool that you have six tattoos! I only have two as of right now, but I plan to get a lot more.
