"Geraldo No Last Name" -Noah Henault

"Geraldo No Last Name" is a chapter in The House on Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros. in this chapter Cisneros tells us of Marin who lives with Cisneros's family, when she went dancing and met a man named Geraldo who later was killed in a hit and run. it was found that there was no id on the man and he was nothing but Geraldo. it tells us how Marin was asked many times who he was and that is all she could say that his name was Geraldo. it does seem that later more info was uncovered about him because Cisneros says things about his life like how he lived and that he sent money to a family no one knows.(pg. 65-66)

The best long passage in this chapter is when Cisneros says "But what difference does it make? He wasn't anything to her. He wasn't her boyfriend or anything like that. Just another brazer who didn't speak English. Just another wetback. You know the kind. The ones who always look ashamed. And what was she doing out at three a.m. anyway? Marin who was sent home with her coat and some aspirin. How does she explain?"(pg. 66). this shows that to Marin this man was truly nothing and that he left no mark even after death.

I will compare this to my own life. I don't know about you but when you hear of deaths of people who you didn't even know yeah its not a happy time you would celebrate but why should I feel outwardly sad or act as though I knew them I feel it a bit disrespectful to mourn as if you know them well but at least pay respect to them and move on

  1. Noah Henault,

I Liked when you said "Cisneros says things about his life like how he lived and that he sent money to a family no one knows.(pg. 65-66)" It made me think of his family back in Mexico that he knew and lived for I wondered what the people in Mexico who knew Geraldo would think , will they forget him , did he forget them? I also liked your choice of long quote showing the relationship between Marin and Geraldo, A theme I considered while reading this chapter was kid romance. I compared/connected this to the book One and Done, they both have the theme dealing on issues with the system. Cisneros writes "if the doctor had only come, they would know who to notify and where." makes you think.
